Sebastián Zuccardi grew up in a family with a strong visionary and innovative spirit. Since in 1963 his grandfather, the engineer Alberto Zuccardi, planted the first hectares of vines in Maipú, Mendoza, the Zuccardi Family has not stopped growing and developing to position itself as an important benchmark in Argentine viticulture. From his father, José Alberto Zuccardi, Sebastián inherited the determination and desire for the permanent search for excellence.
Today Sebastián, the third generation of the family, is working at the head of a young agricultural and oenological team, in charge of producing wines with the highest quality standards in the Uco Valley.
On his initiative, since 2008 the winery has a Research and Development area, dedicated to the study of the terroir and the various variables that affect the quality of the wine. The objective is, in the words of Sebastián himself “not to look for perfect wines, but those that express the place, the region.”
The fruit for Fósil comes from the San Pablo region in the Uco Valley. This is one of the coolest parts of the valley, the vines are planted at 4,500ft in alluvial soils with a little calcium carbonate, “Calicata”, covered with stones. The cooler temperatures plus high UV allow the grapes to mature but maintain acidity in a way that is truly unique to Argentina. Native yeast fermentation occurs both in used French oak barrels and Concrete eggs. This wine combines fully ripened, luscious fruit that speaks clearly of the “New World” style, with an intensity and dryness that is reminiscent of the mountain Chardonnays of the Jura, and the refinement of White Burgundy. Intense, complex, and enticing, this is a Chardonnay unlike any other.
The aromas of spiced apple and butterscotch begin you down a path while the high-energy palate coms straight from the terroir. Lightly buttery baked apple and peach flavors are pure and steady on a firm, balanced finish.
