Senses is the dream of three childhood friends – Chris, Max and Myles – who reunited after various journeys with the vision to produce world-class Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from renowned vineyards. Senses’ estate vineyards are located in the West Sonoma Coast region of northern California, specifically in the small town of Occidental and on properties the three founders grew up on. The West, or ‘True’ Sonoma Coast, is known for delicate, nuanced wines that exhibit depth and balance on the palate.
In 2017, vines leapt into action with replenished water tables after years of drought. Early vegetative growth was strong, but not excessive, and crop yields were moderate to heavy. Warmer summer temperatures ended up compressing harvest for most. And severe heat during harvest caused concern inland but the coast remained relatively protected and delivered typical acid-driven fruit with great phenolic ripeness. The entire harvest wrapped weeks before the devastating 2017 North Bay fires started.
This bottling can be summed up simply as approachable elegance. The 2017 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir nails that right out of the glass. At first you get candied red fruit but the wine quickly evolves to spice and earth. It’s rose petals, it’s tobacco, and it’s forest floor. The fruit is darker, think raspberry and pomegranate fruit leather, while the baking spice and floral elegance take the front seat on this journey. The wine sees 10 months in 100% used French oak barrels.
